What Does Astrology Predict?

Astrology is the ancient tradition of studying the stars and how they relate to the moon, the earth and time of year.  For many centuries, before modern clocks and calendars became the standard, the stars were used as a guiding point for seasons, predicting weather patterns and answering many of the mysteries of life.

At one time, the celestial study of the stars was ranked among the highest scholarly endeavours.  Unravelling the mysteries bound in the night sky and relating them to events on earth was considered profoundly scientific and only the keenest minds could accomplish this.

In more modern times, science has scoffed the use of the stars to predict earthy events, and yet astrology remains one of the most popular trends in the modern world.

Astrology uses the formation of the stars, along with their legendary significance, to gain insight into a person’s habits, personality and intuition.  This is accomplished by matching a person’s date and sometimes even the hour of birth, to the position of the stars at the time they were born.  The dominant stars in formation, along with the position of the moon, are said to greatly influence the type of person the child will become.

Two of the most widely used and popular astrological beliefs are the Chinese Zodiac and Horoscopes.

Chinese Zodiac

The Chinese Zodiac is over 2000 years old, and uses the year of a person’s birth to establish personality traits, inner desires and likely behaviour.  The Chinese Zodiac uses 12 animals, one for each year of the lunar calendar, which is repeated every twelve years.  It also relates each year to the five natural elements, indicating how a person will respond according to the dominant elements the year they were born.

The earthly elements are water, fire, earth, wood and metal, and it is these elements that have the strongest spiritual connection in the Chinese Zodiac.  While the animals of the Zodiac are said to offer some personality attributes, it is actually how a personality will interact and respect these earthy elements that offer the most insight and guidance into a person’s inner being.

Horoscopes

Daily horoscopes are printed regularly in newspapers, a tradition that has been occurring for many decades.  Horoscopes use a celestial map, pinpointing the position of the sun and moon, to determine the influence each will have on the stars.  This information is translated to correspond with each pattern of stars, according to which group of stars was dominant when a person was born.

The position of the stars are thought to influence everything from a person’s mood to their fortune, to the type of decisions they are most likely to make.  Predictions are usually emotional, effecting a person’s love life, family life and social relationships.

They might include events that will happen at work, but this is usually emotionally based predictions, such as “don’t be too hasty if a co-worker makes a suggestion”.  The horoscope focuses primarily on internal reactions to events, rather than predicting the actual outcomes.
